PREVIEW: Newly Ranked Villanova Looks to Take Care of Lehigh in Their Home Opener
At the FCS level, the CAA is one of the most competitive conferences in football. It’s often branded as the SEC of the FCS.
The CAA currently fields five programs ranked in the STATS FCS top-25. Villanova is the newest CAA member to join the ranking after their win against previously ranked Colgate.
Villanova’s rival Delaware begins CAA play at Rhode Island this week. Last year, Rhode Island upset the Blue Hens in their home-opener which may motivate the Hens to get their revenge.
Lehigh at No. 24 Villanova
Lehigh had their first victory of the season slip past them as St. Francis (Pa.) quarterback Jason Brown escaped a would-be sack to fire the game-winning touchdown to down Lehigh 14-13. The Mountain Hawks are coming off of a three-win season that included a 31-9 beatdown by Villanova. The result won’t be much different this time, as the Wildcats have been resting for a week.
Prediction: Villanova 44, Lehigh 10
No. 21 Delaware at Rhode Island
Rhode Island gave the Blue Hens more than they could handle in last season’s opener. The Blue Hens committed three turnovers in the 21-19 defeat. Delaware kicked off 2019 with a 31-13 victory over Delaware State, but most noticeably, the Hens wide receivers caught the ball very well. So well that nine different players registered a reception. If the Hens can have success throwing the ball, it will be difficult for Rhode Island coming off a drubbing in Ohio to stop them.
Prediction: Delaware 36, Rhode Island 17
