After his workout on Friday with the team, Jay Ajayi has agreed to a new contract. This will be his second stint in Philadelphia.
Ajayi was previously not signed with any team. The 26-year-old was at the top of the free-agent market and now looks to make an impact in a well-rounded backfield.
Throughout Ajayi’s four-year career, he has shown solid production. During his time in Miami, Ajayi was extremely successful when given his share of carries. He surpassed 200 rushing yards in two consecutive games; a rare feat.
The running back had a breakout season back in 2016, finishing the season with 1,272 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry. His accomplishments that season landed him his first Pro Bowl nod.
Ajayi has averaged 4.5 yards per carry throughout his young career. His strength is in the run game. While Ajayi won’t shine in the passing game too often, he has a knack for strong, downhill running.
His skill set is very similar to teammate Jordan Howard; both excel with their vision and strength.
This move by the Philadelphia Eagles makes sense. With running back Darren Sproles now on injured reserve, he is done for the season. Adding Ajayi gives the Birds more depth at the position, and relieves the loss of Sproles.
While this isn’t a blockbuster move that many had hoped for, it brings back a familiar face to their offensive system. Once he gets caught up to speed, Ajayi will be able to contribute.
