After the splash that was made on draft night in adding the shooting of Seth Curry, Danny Green, and the subsequent signing of backup big man Dwight Howard, most of us expected Daryl Morey to use the mid-level exception on a backup point guard to add more dribbling and shooting.
Others thought they should invest in a reliable big-bodied wing who can reliably lock down quality opposition wing types.

The Sixers haven’t done this and despite the initial impatience and desire to have an experienced backup unit, the Sixers made the right move in holding off using the mid-level for now.

The biggest reason why no move right now was the best move, is to give the Sixers young core a chance to show they can strongly contribute to the newly constructed team.

The off-season has been short, so in some ways perhaps expectations should be tempered. However, with a newfound optimism around the team, new coaching staff and better fitting roster Matisse, Shake, Furkan, Tyrese Maxey, or even Isaiah Joe could flourish.

Perhaps Shake improves his ball-handling and passing to become a more reliable ball handler. Or maybe the reports of Shake’s increased muscle mass translate to a stronger defender who is capable of guarding quality players, whilst still shooting 40% from three. With an NBA season under his belt, maybe Matisse shoots and hits more threes whilst improving his court awareness.

Does Furkan or Isaiah Joe hold their own on defense whilst shooting lights out from three? Or has Tyrese Maxey’s work ethic taken his exciting game to a new level in the nine months since his last College game?

If the Sixers added more playable veterans now, we may not have gotten the answers to these questions. If decent vets are coming to Philly, they’re coming to get playing time, eating into the minutes of the Sixers youth. Doc is known for favoring veteran guys over rookies when deciding on rotations. Morey and the front office, however, have put Doc in a position where he has to give these guys minutes.

Do Shake, Matisse, Furkan, Tyrese, and Isaiah have what takes to impact winning on a possible contender?
It’s an exciting time, Sixers fans, and we’re about to find out!
