Former Union Homegrown Off to Premier League’s Arsenal

While deadline day has been quiet for current Philadelphia Union players, a former Union homegrown got a career-changing transfer to the top league in the world.

The Colorado Rapids have transferred Auston Trusty to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League. Trusty will remain with the Rapids VIA loan until the summer transfer window, where he will join Arsenal fully.

Per Arsenal, Trusty will then be loaned elsewhere in Europe, as they continue to monitor his development.

Always A Union Homegrown

Auston Trusty signed with the Union as a homegrown in August of 2016. During his 3 seasons with the Union, he would become a staple of the Union’s backline with Jack Elliott. In the 2018 season, Trusty became the youngest player in MLS history to play every minute of the regular season.

Trusty would be transferred from the Union to the Rapids in November of 2019 for $750,000 in guaranteed allocation money (GAM).

Trusty’s transfer away from the Union wasn’t a move of spite. Trusty was a top young CB in the league, and the Union moved to transfer him while his value was high.

On top of that, the Union had Homegrown Mark McKenzie ready to make his mark (no pun intended). On top of that, just a few months later, the Union signed a CB by the name of Jacob Glesnes.

The Union Gain More than Just Attention

While the Union will gain attention from this move, they gain something a little bit more valuable as well.

The Union traded Trusty but retained a percentage of his future sell-on clause.

The Union has a 25% sell-on clause for Auston Trusty, meaning the Union has the right to 25% of the transfer fee to the Rapids.

Best of Luck to Trusty!

At the end of the day, once a Union homegrown, always a Union homegrown.

This is a huge move for Trusty and we wish him the best of luck over there!
