The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is back in 2022. The Union, who now enter the tournament in the Round of 32, know who to prepare for.

The Union was put in a group with Orlando City and Miami CF of MLS, as well as USL 1 side South Georgia Tormenta FC.

Ultimately, the Union was drawn to play Orlando City in Orlando. The time and date are still to be determined, but it will be May 10th or 11th.

US Open Cup Rundown

The US Open Cup is taking place for the first time since 2019. The tournament was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The USOC features teams from all levels of pro soccer in the United States. Most MLS teams entered in this past 3rd round. However, the Union, along with 7 other MLS teams, were given a bye to the Round of 32 (Round 4) due to their position in MLS standings in the 2021 season.

Historic for Pennsylvania, Struggles for the Union

The Philadelphia Union’s time in the US Open Cup has been heartbreaking. The club has finished runner-up 3 times, in 2014, 2015, and 2018.

Despite the Union’s struggles, Pennsylvania is historic in USOC terms. PA has brought home the trophy 15 times, 3rd most by any State. This includes the historic Bethlehem Steel, which had won it a competition best 5 times.

Can the Union Make A Run for Their First USOC Title?

The Union will be tested by Orlando City. Orlando was likely the toughest opponent the Union could have been matched with from their group.

However, an important trait in the USOC is depth, since the competition runs along the MLS Season. The Union has the young homegrown talent that will make it possible for a possible deep run in the tournament.

The Union has a case for the best team in MLS, so a run through the US Open Cup is on the table as the Union looks to add to their trophy case.
