Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

After taking 2 of 3 from the Marlins, the Phillies head up I-95 to take on the hated New York Mets.

At this point in the season every series is important. The Phillies are in the thick of a wild card race, and there isn’t much room for error. Although the Phillies have a favorable schedule the rest of the year, they face an excellent Mets side this weekend.

Against recent opponents, the expectation for the Phillies has been to sweep or at least win the series, which they have been doing. Unlike previous years they are finally taking care of lesser opponents. This weekend might be different as it will be a tough series as the Phillies go up against Scherzer and DeGrom in back-to-back nights.

Tomorrow’s first pitch is at 7:10 PM, with Ranger Suarez facing off against Max Scherzer. Suarez is 8-5 with a 3.68 ERA on the season. Meanwhile, Scherzer is 8-2 with a 1.98 ERA. Historically Scherzer is great against the Phillies, with a 16-5 record and a 2.66 ERA.

We will also have to keep an eye on Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber, who owns the Mets, was diagnosed with a calf strain after leaving today’s game in the fifth inning. Schwarber is day-to-day and would be a significant loss for the Phillies in this series.

Game two is a battle of the aces. Aaron Nola takes on Jacob DeGrom, who is making his third start since returning from the IL. Nola is 8-8 on the season, posting a 3.17 ERA. Nola has been great for the Phillies but has not gotten much help from his offense. In two games this season, DeGrom is 1-0 with a 2.33 ERA.

As much as I hate to say it, DeGrom being back is good for baseball. When healthy, he is the best pitcher in the game. Hopefully, the Phillies can have a repeat of Thursday when they got the better of Sandy Alcantara.

The final game of this series will be a Sunday afternoon game, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:40 PM. The pitching matchup for this game will be Zach Wheeler vs. Chris Bassitt. Wheeler is having another great season at 11-5 with a 2.63 ERA. In comparison, Bassitt is 9-7 with a 3.39 ERA. If the Phillies take a game in this series, it will probably be this one.

The Phillies are 3-9 against the Mets this season. However, the Phils are a much better team than when the teams last met, and it should be a much more competitive series than the 3-9 record suggests. We will truly see what the Phillies are made of this weekend.
