An Unexpected Hero in Philadelphia

Once again, the Philadelphia Union continue to win at home!

The Boys in Blue are on a win streak of 9 games at home, and they certainly take advantage of playing at Subaru Park.

On Thursday, October 20th, Philadelphia narrowly squeezed out a victory against FC Cincinnati by a score of 1-0.

Immediately after kickoff Cincinnati started to put some pressure on attacking the strong Union defense.

But Philadelphia has one of (if not) the best defenses in the league.

The Union defensive group stuck to their game plan and focused on their bread & butter: solid defense and teamwork.

While the first half finished in a 0-0 tie Union head coach, Jim Curtin, managed to keep expectations high in the locker room.

After the start of the second half Philadelphia finally received the opportunity they had been seeking all night.

In the 59th minute, midfielder Leon Flach netted a goal and was the unexpected savior in this match.

It is a heart-warming story as Flach only scored one goal in 5,400 regular-season minutes. He was in the right place at the right time and executed his job perfectly.

Although Flach’s name never stands out on the stat sheet, he has been a key contributor to Philadelphia being the best team in the Eastern Conference.

The Glue of the Union’s Success

However, it is a known fact that Andre Blake is a force to be reckoned with in goal.

Truthfully, there are not many goalkeepers (like Blake) in the MLS who continuously lockdown opponents every game.

This week, MLS announced the winners of the 2022 MLS League Awards.

Undoubtedly, Andre Blake was the clear-cut favorite to be named 2022 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

He also made history because he is the first player in MLS history to win the accolade three times.

Blake backed up his play last Thursday night by having five saves and adding another clean sheet to his record.

Now, Blake and the Boys in Blue will look to defeat New York City FC in order to advance to the MLS Cup.
