If one thing was ever clear after Monday’s disastrous loss against the Washington Commanders, it is that the Eagles need Jordan Davis back quickly. The big run-stuffing defensive tackle was crucial in the success of the defense against the run and his presence is being greatly missed. The veteran additions of Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh will help at the defensive tackle position but getting Davis back is a huge piece to the defense.

The Eagles were torched on the ground against Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce in their Thursday night matchup in week nine and that same trend continued in week ten.

Brian Robinson was able to tally 86 yards on the ground while Antonio Gibson racked up another 44 for Washington. The Eagles’ defense could not get themselves off the field and continually give up first down after first down. The main reason was the Commanders’ ability to rush for five or six yards seemingly every carry.

The Eagles still have good defensive tackles, especially after recent moves, but none of them are able to stop the run as Jordan Davis can. Davis is eligible to return off IR in week 13, right in time for the Titans’ game against Derrick Henry.

The Eagles played all around awful Monday night but the one glaring hole right now is the Eagles’ run defense. If the Eagles cannot sure up their run defense then teams are just going to copy Washington’s game plan.

Getting Davis back to help sure up the run defense is what the Eagles need right now. They can’t rush him back and risk another injury, but they need him back, fast.

In the meantime, the team needs to find ways to address the run defense without the big man. Whether that be playing an extra linebacker or whatever Jonathan Gannon can think of. Over the next couple of weeks, the Eagles will be going against some of the top running backs in the league. Jonathan Taylor, Aaron Jones, Derrick Henry, and Saqoun Barkley just to name a few.

Jonathan Gannon has to figure out a way to contain these star running backs without his big-nose tackle Jordan Davis or it could get ugly. The new veteran additions will certainly help, but it’s hard to gauge how much impact they will really have. Neither of them has played this season yet so they still need time to kick it into high gear. Getting Davis back and adding it with these new additions only makes the defensive line even scarier.
