Amidst the recent MLS season there was some buzz surrounding Union’s left-back, Kai Wagner, leaving the squad.
He has been connected with joining a club in the Premier League due to his impressive play.
Undoubtedly, he has been an anchor for the Union offensively and defensively.
The German star totaled nine assists in 36 matches in the 2022 season.
He was a key facilitator for the Union’s offensive dominance.
On the other side of the pitch Wagner held his own ground, but his defensive skills are slightly above average.
To finish the season Wagner recorded 50 successful tackles.
If Wagner is transferred this off-season a potential replacement is American midfielder, Christian Cappis.
Recently, interest for Cappis has quickly picked up as there have been suitors from MLS teams and clubs in Europe.
Cappis is an extremely versatile player as he can play multiple positions: central midfielder and left-back.
With Cappis’ offensive and defensive skills, the sporting director of the Philadelphia Union, Ernst Tanner, should have his eyes set on inking him to a deal if Wagner departs.
Christian Cappis currently plays for Brondby IF in the Danish Superliga.
Across 16 matches played Cappis recorded 2 goals scored and 1 assist; he started 8 out of the 16 matches he appeared in.
Although his numbers did not stand out on the stat sheet, he clearly has the talent.
The Union could benefit with a box-to-box midfielder as Cappis could contribute on both sides of the pitch.
Hopefully, the Union have their eyes on Christian Cappis as a potential replacement for Kai Wagner in case he leaves the club.
