This historic NFL rivalry which began in 1933 has taken its passion, grit, and hatred to the postseason only four times. This Saturday will be the fifth time these two teams face-off in the playoffs and the third time this season. The Eagles took the season series, winning both games. In New York, Philadelphia won 48-22 and then four weeks later, the Eagles were able to hang on for a 22-16 win in Philadelphia. The Eagles never seemed troubled in either match up, but this game is entirely different. Before this weekend’s game let’s check out how history has treated this matchup.

Eagles vs. Giants Playoff History

These teams have met four times in the postseason. The Giants won the first two games while the Eagles took the next two. The Eagles – Giants playoff series is currently tied 2-2.

1981 NFC Wild Card Game

The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the New York Giants in the wildcard game. New York won by a score of 27-20. The Giants took a 20-0 first quarter lead and were able to hold onto the lead from there. Philadelphia fumbled twice on special teams with one leading to a touchdown. If this Eagles team wants to avoid a similar fate to the 1981 team then they need to take care of the ball on Saturday.

2001 NFC Divisional Game

Twenty years later the teams would meet in their second match-up. The Eagles visited the Giants in the divisional game. Philadelphia lost the game 20-10 thanks to an opening kick-return for a touchdown and an interception returned for a touchdown. The Giants defense was able to shut down the Eagles on the way to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

2006 NFC Wildcard Game

The Eagles got their first playoff win of this historic rivalry in 2006. Philadelphia won 23-20 on a game winning field goal from David Akers as time expired. Jeff Garcia started at quarterback for the Eagles and threw one touchdown to Donté Stallworth. Brian Westbrook was huge for the Eagles, rushing for 141 yards and a touchdown, including a 49 yard touchdown run.

2008 NFC Divisional Game

Two years later the Eagles and Giants would meet again in the playoffs, this time in the divisional round. The six seeded Eagles went on the road and took down the number one seed Giants. Philadelphia walked out of the Meadowlands with a 23-11 victory. The Eagles were able to tie up the playoff series at two games a piece. With the series tied 2-2, we await the next chapter in this rivalry.

2023 NFL Divisional Round

This Saturday night the number one seed Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants. If the Eagles want to avoid an embarrassing upset they need to come out and set the tone early that this team is not to be messed with. The Eagles have the better football team on paper, but you have to play the game. Avoiding major mistakes like turning the ball over and penalties will help the Eagles cruise to a victory. If they do make those mistakes they still have a shot at winning, but it makes it much harder to do so. This Saturday the Eagles will take a 3-2 playoff series lead over the Giants.

Final Prediction: Philadelphia: 38 New York: 24
