Happy 90th Birthday to the Birds
Today marks the 90th Birthday of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at some of the history of the Eagles.
The franchise we all know, and love was established on July 8th, 1933. They remained the Eagles from 1933 to 1942, when they combined with Pittsburgh to make them Steagles for a year. After 1943, they remained the Eagles forever.
In 1948, they won their first championship, and in 1949, they became back-to-back champs. It wasn’t until 1960 that they won their third championship. After that, the drought ensued, and the Eagles wouldn’t see another championship win for another 57 years.
In that 57-year drought, the Eagles won 12 division titles and made it to five conference championships. From the 1960-current day, the Eagles have made the playoffs 26 times.
Lincoln Financial Field wasn’t the only place that the Birds called home. From 1933-1935 they played their home games at the Baker Bowl, which was also the home of the Phillies from 1887-1938. From 1936-1939 ( and 1941), they played their home games at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium, which is now part of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. In 1940 and 1942-1957, they played at Shibe Park, a stadium that also hosted the Philadelphia Athletics and then Phillies.
From 1958-1970, they played their home games at Franklin Field, a field located at Franklin University in Philly. From 1971-2002, they played at Veterans Stadium. This stadium was demolished in 2004 to make parking lots for the Eagles’ current stadium, Lincoln Financial Field.
The Eagles have appeared in four Super Bowls since the NFL entered the Super Bowl era. Their only win was in 2017, which all of us fans remember fondly.
The Birds have 13 members inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Chuck Bednarik, Bert Bell, Bob Brown, Harold Carmichael, Brian Dawkins, Sonny Jurgenson, Greasy Neale, Tommy McDonald, Pete Pihos, Norm Van Brocklin, Steve Van Buren, Dick Vermeil, and Reggie White all hold a special place in Eagles fans hearts for the amazing contributions they have made to the franchise.
The Eagles have an all-time record of 613-630-27. Since the Super Bowl era started, they have a record of 441-416-11.
