From Y.A. Tittle to Brody to Montana to Young and Now Brock Purdy, the 49ers Have Been A Quarterback Producing Machine.

On Sunday afternoon, when Brock Purdy leads the San Francisco 49ers into Lincoln Financial Field for a much-anticipated rematch, he’ll be the second-best quarterback on the field.

It’s not a position that Brock Purdy has been used to in his time in the NFL.

During a period where NFL teams are trying to stop Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense in any way that they can, San Francisco comes into this game with a historic legacy of great quarterbacks.

The team anointed as a tribute to those members of the 1849 Gold Rush became an AAFC team in 1946 and joined the NFL as a team in 1949. In 1951, they drafted quarterback Y.A. Tittle. Tittle was not only the first player to ever be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and was part of San Francisco’s Million-Dollar Backfield and would lead the 49ers to an NFL Divisional Playoff Game in 1957.

When Y.A. Tittle was traded to the New York Giants in 1961, John Brodie became the permanent starter. A member of the 49ers since he was drafted in 1957, Brodie would finish his last season with San Francisco ranked 3rd all-time in NFL passing. He would guide the 49ers to NFC Championship Games in 1971 and 1972.

When Bill Walsh arrived as 49ers Head Coach from Stanford in 1979, he drafted Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana for his West Coast offense. Montana would retire as one of the best NFL Quarterbacks ever, leading the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories (1981, 1984, 1988, and 1989.)

When Montana got injured in 1990, Steve Young became the 49ers starter and would lead them to a Super Bowl victory in 1994, accounting for six touchdowns in the game. Young came to the 49ers in a trade from Tampa Bay in 1987.

Then Brock Purdy was selected at the end of the 2022 NFL Draft. Mr. Irrelevant joined a team that already had Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. After injuries to both 49ers quarterbacks, Purdy was named the 49ers starter last December, taking them to the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers twenty-three year-old quarterback is attempting to maintain elite status with a franchise history of historic quarterbacks. His next step will be a matchup with one of the league’s best in Jalen Hurts this afternoon.

The Eagles quarterback who has already funneled skillsets from prior NFL greats into his game. His next skill will to be to win a championship for the City of Philadelphia.

The next test will be beat the 49ers and Mr. Irrelevant at The Linc this afternoon.
