It’s Not A Moment Too Soon.

In 2026, the United States will turn 250 years old, and Philadelphia will turn 344. If you think that is old, the Lenni Lenape are estimated to have arrived in Pennsylvania around 1000 BCE.

William Penn — the Grand architect whose design the city that was first created by the Europeans in 1682 — whose statue looms large over City Hall to this day. Penn’s chosen location for America’s Capital — where the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers confluence, and expanded into a major metropolis with a handshake Treaty with the areas’ previous occupants — the Lenni Lenape Indians.

Philadelphia’s significance to America is immeasurable. The first capitol of the United States until 1800, its largest city until 1790, and the location of the signing of the Declaration of Independence as well as the 2nd Continental Congress.

In 2024, Philadelphia also still holds another dubious honor.

The year of 1980.

Philadelphia is still the only North American city with all four major sports teams making it to the finals in one year. The Eagles would advance to the Super Bowl that year, falling to the Raiders. The Flyers would “Broad Street Bully” back to the NHL Finals, losing to the NY Islanders. Julius Erving’s 1980 Sixers would reach the Finals and then be dispatched by the Los Angeles Lakers.

That year, only the Phillies would claim the crown as they defeated the Kansas City Royals 4 games to 2.

Philadelphia is also the only North American City to have our of its major professional sports league teams play in the league championship finals at least once since the year 2000.

So why is 2024 provide the optimism that 2024 will be the year of the sport in Philly?

After 55 games, the Flyers are in third place in the Metropolitan Division and pushing for the NHL Playoffs.

The 76ers — awaiting the much anticipated return of All-Star Joel Embiid — are in 5th place and positioning themselves for the NBA Playoffs. Plans are are moving forward for the 76 Place at Market East in Center City, which is expected to open in 2031 with an estimated capacity of 18,500 seats in close proximity to public transportation and the Fashion District Shopping. The Market-Frankford Line and Jefferson Station would be available to fans, an easier destination than trying to get to South Philadelphia.

A late season collapse and early NFC playoff exit cannot dampen the excitement of the Philadelphia Eagles, who are only one year removed from a near victory in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs.

And in September 2024, the Eagles will take the next international step when they open the season on Friday, September 6th in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Jeff Lurie’s original $185 Million investment — now a reported value of $5.6 Billion — are reportedly the #4 most popular NFL team in 2024 according to SportingLad.com. In 2022, the Eagles made $598 Million in total revenue. The Eagles have an outstanding 34.1% international fanbase according to gambling.com, which is one of the highest in all of the NFL.

And now, they are an international sensation as well. In March of 2022, the Eagles were the 19th NFL Team to enter the NFL Global Market Program, acquiring rights in Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Last year during the Super Bowl, the Eagles even hosted an international watch-party in Accu, Ghana.

The Phillies red-hot bats and great pitching are back for 2024. The team that played in both the 2022 and 2023 NL Championship Series and a World Series in 2022 will once again take a run at a 2024 NL Pennant.

Philadelphia has other sports excitement this season besides the four major sport’s franchises.

This week, it was announced that Lincoln Financial Field will host six FIFA World Cup Games in 2026, with estimated revenue around $500 million and $262 Million in direct spending going directly to the City of Philadelphia.

In 2025, Division 1 wrestling championships will be hosted at the Wells Fargo Center. Wrestlemania 40 will be hosted in Philly in April 2024. And Philadelphia will welcome the MLB All-Star Game in 2026.

The last strikeout of the 1980 World Series, when country music singer Tim McGraw’s father Tug McGraw struckout Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals at 11:29 P.M., Philadelphia erupted into celebration.

Fourteen years later in 1994, Tim McGraw released a hit single. It was a #1 hit on and stayed on the charts for 26 consecutive weeks.

You may have guessed the name.

Not A Moment Too Soon.
