Wrestlemania 40 Is Arriving at the Linc in April. South Philly’s Legacy of ECW Has Never Left.

If your planning on traveling to South Philly for the April 2024 Wrestlemania 40 (Wrestlemania XL) you might think that Lincoln Financial Field is a good location for the event.

It’s an even better event for the City of Philadelphia, which will get $262 Million of direct funding over the next two years from this and other sporting events coming to Philadelphia like the 2025 NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships, six 2026 FIFA World Cup Soccer Matches, and the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.

But South Philly is no stranger to wrestling.

ECW’s Philly roots date back to it being the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) in 1989 in South Philly. It’s been thirty years since Eastern Championship Wrestling was founded by Tod Gordon in 1992 and run by HHG Corporation. In 1993, wrestling manager Paul Heyman took control of creative operations. ECW borrowed from international styles of fighting including from Mexico and Japan.

At its height, ECW became #3 as a wrestling promotion in the US by the end of the 1990s.

In 2001 and unable to secure a renewed TV contract, parent company HHG folded.

In bankruptcy by 2003, ECW was launched again in 2005 in parallel to Raw and SmackDown and ran until 2010 on Syfy.
