The Eagles have already begun changing their secondary for the 2024 season.

With just over a week until free agency begins, they’ve made a move many expected to happen.

Releasing Maddox will save the Eagles an additional $2 Million in cap space. Giving them closer to $46M to spend on the upcoming free agency period. With many positions to fill, the secondary should see it’s changes during the off-season.

Releasing Maddox

Maddox was carrying a $9.6 Million cap hit for the 2024 season. The Eagles’ slot corner was great when healthy. The problem is that since signing his 3-year $22.5M contract on November 20th, 2021, Maddox has missed 22 of 46 games in the two-and-a-half seasons since. (Not including the Week 18 game against Dallas in 2021)

Missing half of the playable games was a major issue for an Eagles defense that saw the following players miss time in the last 2 seasons: Darius Slay(5 games), C.J. Gardner-Johnson(6 games), Sydney Brown(3 games), Justin Evans( 7 games), Zech McPhearson(17 games), Reed Blankenship(2 games) and Bradley Roby(3 games).

Losing multiple corners for several weeks didn’t help the Eagles’ defensive woes, and it showed.

It’s understandable if the Eagles do move on from Maddox, but this doesn’t rule out the opportunity for a new contract, similar to what the Eagles did with Slay last off-season

The Future Of The Secondary

Avonte Maddox might be the only cornerback off the roster for now.

After a grueling end to the season, many wanted to see James Bradberry off the team. While GM Howie Roseman made a quick comment on Bradberry being “Under contract, part of our plan.” at the end of his combined interview, it didn’t seem very convincing. We’re a long way from September, and there’s also a suitable replacement coming off a season-long suspension.

Remember in August when the Eagles signed Isaiah Rodgers after the Colts waived the corner who got suspended from gambling on the NFL? He’ll be coming off the Reserve/Suspended List and will be under contract with the team.

Add in Sophomore seasons from Eli Ricks and Kelee Ringo; plenty of options are on the sideline. And that’s before they even take a shot at any potential free-agent signings, with available players including Jeff Okudah, Kenny Moore, and Stephon Gilmore.

The birds released Kevin Byard last week with an open spot at Safety and the likelihood of Sydney Brown missing an extended period next season. The Eagles could go big game hunting in the safety position. There are plenty of players available, including Justin Simmons, Micah Hyde, and Xavier McKinney. If there’s any chance for a reunion, C.J. Gardner-Johnson is also on the market.

If there’s looks to improve the defense, safety needs the most help. With another free agent in Justin Evans and 1 long-term injury.

Who would you like to see in the Eagles’ secondary next season?
