Imhotep Charter vs. St. Joe’s Prep Was a Winner for Philly
Friday Wasn’t Just the Best of High School Football.
It Was the Best of Philly.
Two of Philly’s powerhouse teams met at a neutral location for the District XII 6A Football Championship on Saturday. Two of Philadelphia’s most successful high school football programs in recent years faced off during a blustery Saturday afternoon at Northeast High School. In many ways, it’s a shame that someone had to win (St. Joe’s Prep won 42–0).
It takes age and experience to understand that the best of Philadelphia Football doesn’t play at Lincoln Financial Field on Sundays with incredible backflips from Saquon Barkley, one-handed marvel catches from Devonta Smith, or nearly unstoppable offensive performances from A.J. Brown.
Oh, no.
It’s fall Friday nights under the lights or any sun-soaked Saturday before Thanksgiving in the Delaware Valley that showcases what Philly football is all about. Our neighborhood baseball diamonds showcase incredible acrobatic catches, our blacktop basketball courts capture amazing feats of athleticism, and our local fields feature teeth-rattling hits.
Imhotep Charter Institute High School (10–2) slammed into the St. Joe’s Prep Team (8–2), continuing a run that is one of the best in Pennsylvania High School Football. The game also featured a matchup of two marquee running backs, Imhotep Charter’s Jabree Wallace-Coleman, who will play for James Franklin and Penn State next season, and St. Joe’s Prep Khyan Billups. On this day, St. Joe’s Prep Sophomore Quarterback Charlie Foulke would connect on three touchdown passes in the first half. The icing on the cake was a 91-yard interception by Defensive End Anthony Sacca, who will play at Notre Dame next season.
Last year, former Philadelphia Eagles D’Andre Swift and Olamide Zaccheaus joined St. Joe’s graduates. They visited a program that has won seven 6A PIAA State Championships in recent Pennsylvania High School Football dominance.
Friday night’s game wasn’t just about a final score.
It was about the best of our Philadelphia athletics. It was about the best of Philly.
