Like the City It Calls Home , Philly Sports Have a History of Endurance
America is on the precipice of the 250th Anniversary of the birth of our nation, and all eyes will be right here in Philadelphia, where it all began.
For millions of international tourists expected to visit our nation this year, it quickly becomes evident while traveling around the city that sport is important to this metropolis.
From the very creation of Philadelphia around ninety years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 , leisure was incorporated into plans from the very beginning. The roots of our green spaces, as five squares around the city, still stand today, and the design of Philadelphia in the 1680s did not begin as one of prosperity , but rather one of peace. Since then, we’ve got the oldest College Football Stadium in America, the first MLB (National League) baseball game, America’s first Auto Show and Auto Club, and our Phils are the oldest continuous baseball team in MLB history.
We’ve seen the Phillies win the World Series in 1980 and 2008, and go back in 1983, 2009, and 2022. We saw the Eagles parade down Broad Street in 2018 and 2025, and the Birds won a World Championship the Day after Christmas in 1960. We were on Broad Street again, back-to-back, when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975. And we rejoiced with our Sixers when Dr. J. helped to bring us a Sixers Championship in 1983.
Lincoln Financial Field will host six FIFA World Cup Games in 2026, with estimated revenue of around $500 million and $262 million in direct spending going to the City of Philadelphia. In 2025, Division 1 wrestling championships were held at the Wells Fargo Center. WrestleMania 40 was held in Philadelphia in April 2024. And Philadelphia will welcome the MLB All-Star Game in 2026.
But more often than not — like the end of the Eagles’ past campaign in their 93rd of their existence — seasons end with let’s just say — short of our expectations. We’ve gone 43 years since the Sixers’ last championship — 51 since the last Flyers one. The Phils took 100 years to win a championship (no rush), and now it seems that each year they have been moving one step farther away from another. The Eagles waited 57 years to be NFL Champions. The wait was so long that we pelted Santa after a blizzard in 1968, fired countless coaches, and even had a court in our stadium.
So if you’re wondering what keeps us coming back year after year?
It’s actually pretty simple. Frozen below Philadelphia’s veins while another Super Bowl is played without the Eagles in it — is hope itself. A spirit of hope and endurance that led us to a Declaration of our Independence right here.
Give us one more run up the Art Museum Steps with Rocky Balboa at the top and Smokin’ Joe Frazier at the landing. One more double-header at Citizens Bank Park during August afternoons, the sun on our faces during a walk through Ashbourne Alley. One more Big 5 College Basketball Game at the Palestra decided by a fraction of a second and culminating with an eruption of excitement.
One more Flyers or Sixers Game at the end of the day after work — the perfect cross-town conclusion to a long day. One more cheesesteak from Pat’s, Geno’s, or Dassandro’s. In any order. One more Eagles game with the decibel-level cheers rattling our eardrums again and again when they are at home — one more pulsating afternoon in front of the big screens at XFinity Live when they are away.
But even more than that, it’s for a chance at that incredible sensation. The perfect culmination of a Red October and a championship at Citizens Bank Park. A chance to walk down Broad Street, dodging the February snowflakes during another Eagles Parade. One more chance to touch the Stanley Cup or the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
In anticipation of that , we’ll be waiting.
For as long as it takes.
