Has Mike Gansey Built the NBA’s Most Complete Roster?
The Philadelphia 76ers entered one of their most significant summers in recent memory when Mike Gansey was appointed President of Basketball Operations earlier this offseason.
Serious concerns lingered about the roster and whether Philadelphia’s championship window was closing after yet another disappointing playoff defeat.
After only a few months, the situation has drastically shifted.
Gansey hasn’t taken long to make his mark, making bold personnel changes that have given Philadelphia depth, star power, and experience.
The Sixers seem to have established themselves as one of the NBA’s leading contenders, even though the regular season has not yet started.
Now, the most important question is whether Gansey has done enough to assemble a team that can contend for an NBA title.
A New-Look Core
Jaylen Brown’s massive acquisition by Philadelphia, which gave the Sixers another proven All-Star with the ability to affect both ends of the court, was the biggest shift. Brown gives the team another reliable scorer, defender, and postseason performer, joining Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to form one of the game’s most talented cores.
When LeBron James made the shocking choice to sign with the Sixers for what is widely anticipated to be the last season of his illustrious NBA career, the excitement only grew. Even if he is no longer at his peak, James is still one of the brightest players in basketball. He offers a team that wants to win a championship invaluable leadership, championship experience, and versatility.
Instead of depending almost entirely on Embiid and Maxey, Philadelphia now has a number of players who can dominate games in different ways going into the season. During the Process era, the franchise has hardly ever had that degree of flexibility.
Championship Teams Need More Than Stars
It takes much more than just assembling elite players to build a championship contender. Roster balance, depth, defensive adaptability, and players who know and accept their duties are characteristics of successful teams.
That seems to have been Gansey’s top priority during the offseason. Philadelphia has improved the depth surrounding its great players and acquired seasoned veterans, giving head coach Nick Nurse more lineup flexibility. This squad seems far better prepared to handle the demands of an 82-game season than it was a few months ago, regardless of whether the Sixers need more experienced leadership, perimeter defense, or secondary scoring.
On paper, Philadelphia has addressed many of the issues that arose during last season’s disappointing playoff run.
Questions Still Need Answers
No roster starts a season without uncertainty, despite how positive the offseason has been.
One of the main narratives surrounding the franchise will once again center on Joel Embiid’s health. During the season, LeBron James will turn 42; thus, managing his workload will become more crucial. Meanwhile, it will take effort, commitment, and support from all parties to fit multiple elite players into a single, coherent system.
Also, Nick Nurse will have to make the most of a team full of elite players while ensuring each player understands their responsibilities. Champions are not guaranteed by talent alone, and developing chemistry frequently turns out to be just as crucial as building the team.
The Foundation Has Been Built
For the direction he has led the organization in such a short period of time, Mike Gansey deserves a great deal of praise. The Sixers have changed from an unsure club to one with realistic hopes of winning a championship going into the 2026–2027 campaign.
It remains to be seen if this team ends up winning Philadelphia’s first NBA title since 1983. The team’s success will ultimately depend on injuries, chemistry, and postseason performance.
For now, though, Gansey has fulfilled the duties of President of Basketball Operations by giving his coaching staff access to one of the NBA’s most skilled and deep teams.
The players must now show it is enough to return another Larry O’Brien Trophy to Philadelphia.
