Philly-Area Recruits to Watch in the 2024-25 College Football Season
The 2024 college football schedule is set to kick off on Saturday, August 24th, this year’s Week Zero.
Although skilled coaching is foundational to the success of any team, it’s the performance of the players that ultimately determines the outcome of the game.
And the Philadelphia region certainly has a number of promising new players with the talent and potential to become breakout stars this season.
With the upcoming 2024-25 college football schedule just around the corner, these up-and-coming names will undoubtedly be the ones to watch on the field this season.
Prep Quarterback Samaj Jones

Samaj Jones, a senior quarterback and graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, has committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats. The 5-foot-11, 215-pounder is an impressive four-star recruit and the 26th highest-ranked quarterback in the country, according to 24/7 Sports. Jones finished up the last season, throwing for 2,526 yards and making 32 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 740 yards and 14 touchdowns.
In fact, Jones holds a number of St. Joe’s Prep passing records, including being the first-ever Prep quarterback to throw for 400 yards and seven touchdowns in a single game. He also helped the Hawks win a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 6A state championship game.
Jabree Wallace-Coleman commits to the Nittany Lions
Jabree Wallace-Coleman, a graduate of Philadelphia’s Imhotep Institute Charter High School, recently committed to the Nittany Lions. He’s replacing running back Alvin Henderson, who recently walked away from his Penn State commitment in order to remain in his home state of Alabama.
Wallace-Coleman is currently the top 38th running back in the U.S. and a three-star recruit with the potential to make a real impact on the team. He rushed for 1585 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, which led to him becoming the 5A player of the year at Imhotep. Notably, out of the total nine players also on the team, Wallace-Coleman is the only Philadelphia native.
So, with Wallace-Coleman now in place, Penn State’s 2025 class is currently ranked sixth nationally, according to 24/7 Sports.
Pope John Paul II’s Kevin Heywood
Kevin Heywood, a 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive tackle from Pope John Paul II High in Royersford, has committed to the Wisconsin Badgers. He’s a consensus four-star recruit who played a key role in helping the Golden Panthers win their first Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) title since 2013. On3 currently ranks Heywood as the No. 60 overall player, No. 9 offensive tackle, and No. 2 player in Pennsylvania in the 2024 class.
Heywood is a Philly-region native in high demand as numerous Power Five programs across the U.S. attempted to recruit him. In addition to Wisconsin, he received offers from Stanford, Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, Penn State, Georgia, Miami, and Southern Cal, among others.
The Philly-region is home to numerous promising college football players.
These up-and-coming names are sure to be the ones to watch in the upcoming 2024-25 season.
